Botox, Injectables and Peels Q & A

Is there a difference between Botox and injectable fillers?

Yes. While the end result is about the same — noticeably more youthful skin — they work very differently. With Botox, you’ll be injected with a small dose of a certain botulinum strain. It relaxes your tense facial muscles, so your wrinkles and fine lines flatten out.

With dermal fillers, the injection is made of a substance, like hyaluronic acid, that plumps up your skin. Dermal fillers make wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin disappear as it’s injected.

Will I have long-lasting results with Botox and injectable dermal fillers?

It’s going to depend on which type of injection you choose and your body. Most men and women receiving Botox and dermal fillers have results that last for at least three months. In some cases, you could have smoother, more youthful skin, for up to a year.

What can a peel do for my skin?

Peels, known as chemical peels, aren’t just for giving your face a youthful glow, although that’s where they are most commonly used. They’re also beneficial for revealing younger, smoother looking skin on your hands, chest, and neck.

Consider getting a chemical peel if you want to:

  • Improve the appearance of unsightly scars
  • Treat acne outbreaks
  • Minimize fine lines and wrinkles
  • Reduce the appearance of sun damage and age spots
  • Lighten freckles and dark spots (melasma)
  • Have smoother looking and feeling skin

How do peels work?

Chemical peels work by exfoliating and getting rid of old, dead skin cells. You can generally opt for surface level, medium level, or deep peels. With a surface level, or superficial peel, Dr. Heidari applies a mild acid, like alpha-hydroxy, to your skin. This gentle mixture penetrates the surface of your skin and exfoliates. A surface level peel is ideal for quickly improving your skin’s appearance and to even out mild discoloration.

If you opt for a medium type of peel, Dr. Heidari uses glycolic or trichloroacetic acid. These acids penetrate both the outer and middle layers of your skin. Medium peels are helpful for lightening age spots, smoothing fine lines, and improving the appearance of freckles.

With deep peels, Dr. Heidari usually uses trichloroacetic or phenol acid. These stronger acids penetrate even further, giving you the most dramatic improvement in your skin, including improving discoloration from scars. Because these peels go deep, they’re only designed to be used on your face.
